The Grinnell College Libraries are here to help you utilize your resources for your research! Whether you are in the brainstorming stage, the investigative stage, or if you are on your way to producing a finished paper, we are happy to help. Below are several tips for how to engage with our resources effectively.

First stop: Visit the library’s homepage. There you can use the search box to search the catalog for books, journal articles, newspaper articles, CDs, DVDs, and anything else in the Grinnell College Libraries collections. Or check out the list of databases to find other ways to search. Use the Doing Research page for research strategies and tips.

Borrow books and more: Borrow materials on Interlibrary Loan (ILL) or use TRAC (Two Rivers Alma Collaborative) by using Primo, searching for an item, checking for availability through our library catalog, and requesting delivery to Burling Library. Books usually arrive in 2 to 3 days.

Beyond Google Scholar: Conduct research in Special Collections and Archives and explore our Digital Grinnell repository. Improve your search experience for scholarly journal articles and links to ebooks with LibKey Nomad.

We are here for YOU: Our mission is to help you with whatever it is you are working on! Go to our Subject and Course Guides and you can find the consulting librarians associated with a given subject. Or, for more in-depth research help, request a Library Lab which is an online or in-person one-on-one or small group research consultation with a librarian.

In short: Take advantage of the wide array of resources available to you at the Libraries and don’t hesitate to contact us or feel free to reach out to a librarian directly.

LibKey Nomad is a browser extension to get fast access to scholarly academic articles and Ebooks.

• “Download PDF” will take you directly to a PDF of the article.
• “Article Link” will take you to a webpage of the article.
• In addition, Nomad will let you know when an article has been retracted and if you click, it will list the reasons why.

Headsets are available for checkout from the Circulation Desk. Headsets are required for use at the 1st or 2nd station.These stations are also equipped with Bluetooth capabilities if you have your own Bluetooth headset you would like to use.

Checkout a portable DVD player at the Circulation Desk for viewing anywhere in the library. Library use only, 4-hour checkout.

Grinnell students, faculty, and staff have access to the extensive primary source collections of the Center for Research Libraries (CRL), an international consortium of university, college, and independent research libraries.

CRL Resources

• 6,500 international newspapers, many dating to the 1700s — the largest collection of circulating newspapers in North America.
• 4,500 U.S. newspapers, many dating to the colonial era, including 2,000 ethnic titles.
• foreign journals that are rarely held in U.S. libraries
• more than 800,000 foreign dissertations
• a rapidly growing collection of over 1 million digital resources. View highlights of the digital collections
• area studies — major microform and paper collections from Africa, Latin America, Middle East, Europe, Asia, Southeast Asia, and other world regions.
• CRL digital collections, to support teaching and research at member libraries, scanned by request

Center materials can be obtained for extended loan periods and at no cost by users affiliated with member libraries. Loans can be made for extended periods and without limitation on the format or amount of material borrowed. Arrangements to borrow CRL materials (particularly microforms) are made through interlibrary loan or one can have materials digitized on demand. In most cases, print or microform items requested from CRL should arrive within one week and items that can be delivered electronically should arrive within one week as well. In some cases, material will be digitally scanned and offered that way.

The Grinnell College Libraries is pleased to support open access through its read-and-publish agreements with several publishers that produce scholarly journals. These agreements waive article processing charges (APCs) often attached to open-access publishing for Grinnell College authors. Note that Cambridge University Press and Oxford University Press represent more than 800 journals from all disciplines.

• Project Muse is a digital library of humanities and social sciences academic journals.
• Transparent Language helps millions learn over 100 foreign languages.
• Adam Matthew publishes unique primary source collections from archives around the world.
• Credo Reference is an easy-to-use online reference tool for starting research. Gather background information on your topic from hundreds of full-text general and subject-specific reference titles, as well as numerous images, audio files, and video clips.

Curious about what open educational resources exists for your subject area? Want some strategies for open pedagogy? Take advantage of the Open Curriculum Consultation form and a librarian will do research for you and bring back the resources found!  This form will allow you to decide if you are interested in open educational resources, open pedagogy, or both!  Not sure what those are? Check out the SPARC’s guide for better definitions.
